Windows Update 1607 Failed To Install
Hi shahmat,I don't think the age of the machine has anything to do with the upgrade failing, I upgraded an X1 Gen. 2, a Helix Gen. 1, and a ThinkPad X200 convertible with very few issues. It looks like you skipped a couple of upgrades on your machine, Windows latest upgrade is Ver. Do you have enough space on your hard drive, you should have at least 16 GB? What are you using for Virus Protection, sometimes that will stop an upgrade? Edit: Make sure you have the AC adapter plugged in and a good charge on the battery before you do the upgrade.I haven't skipped any versions on any of my machines, but when I do an upgrade, I always run Lenovo and install any critical or recommended updates before the Windows upgrade and I run Vantage afterwards to see if anything shows up.You could do a clean install, but be sure to backup everything before you do.Regards,Dave. Some folks feel that the rule of thumb is that anything made before 2015 may not be compatible.

However, friends have installed 1803 smoothly on devices from as early as 2008, so it's hard to give a one-size-fits-all answer. Once your drivers and BIOS are updated, I suggest waiting until at least July for a more mature version of 1803, and using the Media Creation Tool rather than Windows Update or Update Assistant on the MCT website. Scroll past the Update Assistant, and Download the tool itself.Info here if you need it:Please report any current update issues via the Feedback Hub. Thanks for the reply Dave,Ya I have 40 gigs free, and just windows defender for antivirus. The vantage software crashes at about 98% when I run it to check for updates but I've been able to update the BIOS and everything else using the lenovo System Update 5 tool.I've also tried using the media creator tool to do a fresh install via USB but it crashes about halfway through the usb creation process each time. Not quite sure how to proceed, but I guess will keep trying to get a clean install working.Thanks,Sol.
Hi Sol,You shouldn't even be seeing an upgrade to version 1607 like your screenshot says, it should be saying 1803. All the other updates even say 1607. Did you happen to upgrade your hard drive recently?
There are some issues with Series 600 hard drives with 1803 not installing. It is also strange that Lenovo Vantage crashes, if you go to the Windows Store and look at Vantage, does it show an update for it? Maybe try uninstalling it and reinstalling it from the Windows Store.
There could be a firmware update for your hard drive in the updates that haven't made it to the driver page.I'm just a little worried that other applications aren't working along with the upgrade to 1803. Those issues could be connected.Have you changed any settings in the bios? If you have, you might want to go into the bios and reset it to its defaults. F9 I believe.Another thing to try is when you to into Windows Update and it shows the upgrade and all the other updates, try rebooting the computer when the updates show up and go back into Windows Update afterwards and see if anything changed.

You really want to see 1803, not 1607.Regards,Dave. Hi TCI,I have an X1 Gen. 5 and I was able to update it to 1803.
My only glitch was the fingerprint reader wouldn't work, but upon reboot, I went into Accounts and rescanned my fingerprints and rebooted. My FPR has been working ever since.I see in your other post that you think the hard drive is causing the problem, what hard drive do you have in your machine? Do you have any devices plugged into the machine during the update, like a dock or external hard drive or anything else? Are there any yellow flags in Device Manager? At the top of the page in Device Manager, click on View and then click on 'Show Hidden Devices.' Mine updated with only the fingerprint problem, but I ran Vantage and got all my updates done and then did the update for 1803. Afterward, I ran Vantage and Windows Update again and WU found some more updates. Mine has been running OK since.Regards,Dave.
