This thread/question really interests me also. I suffered a very bad neck injury 2 years ago, and want to purchase a Les paul (hence joining the forum), but weight is a major issue for me now sadly.I own two Strats -ones an '87 USA Strat Plus and light as a feather, and ones an '88 Jap HM Strat and is like an anchor its so heavy.I looked at Les pauls in a UK shop last week. As most UK guys will relate to, choice was limited -i looked at a Traditional and that seemed very heavy. I picked up a cheapo budget model (satin cherry finish, screen printed logo at £599 GBP), that was light, but I didnt want such a basic model. I fancied a treat after 2 shocking years. So I too will be curious to read what choices guys suggest whether Gibson, or not. Many thanks for the replies.
I also apologise to the OP for jumping in on his thread, but I'd been meaning on asking for weight advice on LP's for a while, and 2 identical threads seemed a waste.I'm only looking at new current models myself.Apart from the 2008 Standard (which I can afford), and then the chambered R8's (which are about 3500 GBP/5700 USD in the UK, which is alittle steep for me), are there any other Models in the current range to consider?I wasn't fancying the asymmetrical neck on the Standard, so was considering importing a chambered R8 if that worked out cheaper than a UK model. But did wonder what else might be there to look at.I wasnt sure that chambering always = lightweight. Reason I say that, whilst I'd favour a Gibson over anything else, I had hung my nose over various websites with PRS's, and some chambered singlecuts and SC58's were coming up fairly heavy. This business of getting old and injured is a real bummer. Two years ago I was running 20 miles a week and bench-pressing 130 kilo's, and now I'm quibbling over 2lb here or there on a guitar!! I've owned dozens of singlecut guitars over the years and IME, there is no way around the weight issue if you want a 'genuine' feeling Les Paul. It's inherent in the design of the instrument for it to need to be a fat bottomed girl. The moment you start to cut weight on the body, you're going to make it neck dive. Those chambered/weight-relieved models just don't have the same balance.
Les Paul Studio Lite Pickups
They'll level out the way a SG does, especially if you favor 50's necks and Grover tuners. Everything you add north of the heel and shave, south of it destroys balance.Luckily, today there are plenty of options out there that give you the Les Paul tone and maintain playing comfort.
